Living Room Consider ceilling fixtures, wall sconces or a floor lamp as complementary. These fixtures are ideal sources of task for reading or playing games, as well as serving aesthetic purposes. Recessed and track are ideal to make a room come alive. These fixtures can be used to accent art work, wall washing, or glazing. Layer with light, using wall washers, downlights, and accent lights on dimmers to create a medley of possible effects – from spacious to intimate. Place light source at various heights within the room (ceiling, table, floor) to add visual interest and human scale. Use translucent shades on table lamps to contribute to the ambient light level. Dining Room Use more than a chandelier or just one fixture to light the room. Layer with light from a variety of sources to get the most flexibility for creating different moods in the same room. When hanging a chandelier, make sure that the chandelier is 6" to 12" smaller than the narrowest side of the table. The bottom of the chandelier should be approximately 30" above your table. Chandeliers with 200 to 400 overall wattage provide abundant illumination for a dining room. Using dimmers and layering with light allows you to use the bright light you need while setting your table, and then bring the light down when your guests arrive. This will provide additional light on the table, and will also bring out the luminosity of the chandelier. Choose chandeliers that are at least one foot smaller in diameter than the smallest table dimensions. When using down over the dining room table, be careful not to create unbecoming dark shadows on your guest's faces. Placing additional light sources elsewhere in the room helps to balance the light. Wash one wall with light, or add decorative torchieresor wall scones to provide additional layers of ambient light. Use halogen bulbs. Use halogen bulbs in adjustable accent lights to highlight plants, artwork, or special furnishings. Colors will really look their best. Mount small halogen or miniature fluorescent bulbs inside your china cabinet and valences to add a dramatic effect in your dining room. If you want to create a brilliant display in the middle of your table (flowers perhaps) use a bulb with a very narrow beam in a recessed fixture overhead.
Bedroom General lighting can be provided by ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, fan lights, recessed downlights, or wall sconces, giving you the illumination you need to dress and see into drawers and closets. At the dressing table, an adjustable, lighted magnifying mirror will provide ideal for grooming and applying makeup. Inspire romance by dimming all incandescents. Use a halogen floor-mounted directional fixture, with flood lamps to project light through plants from the floor it's an excellent way to soften a room with interesting shadows. Place a light behind a large plant or indoor tree and aim it through the leaves toward the ceiling. Break the room into several zones by switching them separately, then adjust according to the mood you want to set. Provide light for reading by choosing swing-arm or flexible bedside lamps. Illuminate artwork over the headboard with ceiling-mounted fixtures placed close to the wall to avoid direct glare. For closets, choose energy-efficient, long-life fluorescent bulbs with very good color.
Children's Room Children's rooms will benefit from the use of track lights, which can be swiveled, rotated, and aimed in any direction to shed light on play areas, hobbies, or homework. As the child grows older, the fixtures can be moved and redirected toward a stereo cabinet or sitting area. Consider fluorescent valance to give the appearance of a bright, cheery space. For safety reasons, avoid the use of most types of floor-mounted fixtures. Try long lasting LED lights that stick practically anywhere. Some lights come in several fun colors your child will love.
Bathroom For general lighting, areas over 100 square feet require several recessed down lights or decorative mounted fixtures. Try companion flush or semi flush mounts to enhance bathroom vanity lights in larger bathrooms. Try lighter colors on walls and accents to reflect light causing it to bounce around the room. For best results, you want diffused, softer light in the bathroom. For task, use recessed instead of a fixture mounted directly over the mirror to avoid creating shadows. Placing strip lights or wall sconces to either side of the mirror are the best ways to eliminate shadows on the face. For accents, direct a small recessed light on a piece of decorative art work or a striking powder basin. Angle recessed shower fixture and highlight nice tile work or make your shower fixtures sparkle. Use light sources like warm or cool white fluorescent bulbs to enhance appearance of skin tones and decor. Using such fluorescents will create better reflection off surfaces and help you see yourself in true light. To make the room more inviting, try dimming all incandescent and halogen sources and keep a candle burning.
Kitchen
For general lighting, decorative fluorescent fixtures centered over a workspace are the most common choice. For kitchens less than 100 square feet require use two lamp fluorescents, whereas, up to 250 square feet will require supplemental. Down lights mounted 18" off the edge of cabinets, and spaced 3' to 4' on centers is ideal to generate additional light. Try using cool white fluorescent bulbs to enhance cool colors like gray and blue, or try warm white bulbs to enhance warm colors like yellow, red, and beige or to complement wood cabinets. Try fluorescent lamps under cabinet fixtures at the edge of your cabinets to illuminate your workspace and reduce shadows in food preparation areas. This is also an energy-saving and cost efficient source. When open areas over sinks, use recessed halogen or fluorescent valance, or recessed downlights mounted directly over the sink. Try the 50 watt 30 long neck. Conceal fluorescent strip lights above cabinets to provide soft, indirect illumination. This effect works especially well if you place colored decorative glassware above your cabinets. Switch general and task lights separately, and use a dimmer for all halogen lights to create different moods for cooking and entertaining. For accent, use halogen track fixtures to give your kitchen extra dimension and illuminate special home objects, such as architecture, art , spices or food presentation areas. Wall mounted fixtures can be adjusted for a variety of kitchen chores – and to varying heights of the cook's helpers. An adjustable swing-arm fixture offers the greatest flexibility.
Foyers and Hallways This area of the home gives a first impression of a home's interior. Therefore, center a traditional chandelier, contemporary pendant or traditional ceiling fixtures to provide basic illumination and a welcoming atmosphere. Be sure to consider sizing the fixture to the space. Remember you must have good lights for safety reasons. To prevent accidents, stairs should be lit from top to bottom with switches in both places. To ensure safety, also place fiztures every 8 to 10 feet in hallways. Tie fixtures with the chandelier/ pendant. Choose semi flush lights for hallways and smaller chain lung lights for stairways. For accent needs, use matching wall sconces to complement your chandelier or pendant. Add a dimmer to set the tone of the room. Use decorative products in the foyer to add a warm, welcoming touch. Try washing one side of a hallway with light by using linear fluorescent bulbs in valances or coves. In areas with higher, vaulted ceilings (above 8 feet), consider using halogen track lights to highlight photographs and artwork in hallways and entry areas. Try a torchiere lamp to soften the appearance of walls and ceiling. In hallways, try placing some fixtures high on walls, directing light downward. This will add drama and a feeling of spaciousness.
Office and Study Wash the walls with our halogen bulbs to give a bright, spacious appearance. To avoid washing out your computer screen, locate a light between your computer and the wall. As a result the wall itself becomes the source of diffused, no-glare illumination. Consider indirect from compact fluorescent fixtures or from compact fluorescent torchieres to reduce shadows and enhance visual comfort. Avoid directly over your work area, which will cause glare or put you in your own shadow. Instead place desk-mounted task lights on either side. Other possible light sources include downlights and wall valances. Ask your electrician about using electronic ballasts for all fluorescents to eliminate flicker and noise.
